State of the Mental Health Profession: Impact of COVID-19

Role: Report writer & content strategist

What long-term impact has the pandemic had on mental health care?

To find out, SimplePractice surveyed more than 2,400 mental health practitioners at the beginning of 2021. The survey asked participants questions about their financial concerns following the pandemic, their feelings about virtual care, and about themselves. In the face of unprecedented demand for mental health care, we wanted to know how practitioners themselves were faring.

After receiving the raw data from the survey, I distilled the responses into three categories: state of professionals, state of insurance, and state of technology. From there, I parsed the data I thought our audience would find most valuable, and worked closely with our design team to display the data in an emotional and human way.

Once the report was written, I spearheaded the distribution strategy through social media, a dedicated landing page, and email campaigns.

The full report is over 30 pages long, and is a lot of information for busy practitioners to digest at once.

I worked with our social media, email, and website teams to make sure we distributed the report is as many mediums as possible. For our social media efforts, we pulled out the most emotional and intriguing quotes from the text to pique peoples' interest and encourage them to download the full report.

Across all our social media channels since the publication of this report, over 200 people have clicked through to the dedicated landing page.

The data from the survey revealed a couple key themes: that practitioners were burnt out overall, that they were worried about changing insurance regulations, and that their views on telehealth care were shifting.

Following those themes, I pulled out relevant pieces of data from the survey responses and worked with our design team to create graphics that presented the responses in a digestible and engaging way.

Practitioner burnout was one of the main themes of the report, which is a topic we’ve covered in other kinds of content.

In our email campaign promoting the report, we included other relevant Pollen Magazine articles about how to fight burnout, so that we presented a holistic outlook on an issue that’s clearly top-of-mind for our audience.

The report is available to our audience on the resource page of our main SimplePractice site.

All of our other promotional efforts lead to this page, which has a gated download option for us to capture any leads that this report has generated.

Since we published this report, along with the landing page in May of 2021, the landing page has had over 8,000 page views, and nearly 1,000 downloads of the full report.
